Neoclassicism

This movement was dominant during the mid 18th century to the end of 19th century. It is based on the art of ancient Rome and Greece. The term neoclassicism is sometimes used for 'classical revival in modern time'. It is associated with the art of antiquity- harmony, clarity, restraint, universality and idealism. Followers of neoclassicism relinquished Barouqe and Rococo, and had a desire to return to the perceived "purity" of the arts of Rome. In contast to Baroque and Rococo, neoclassic paintings have very strong colors.

A very outstanding neoclassical building is Somerset House in central London. The central block is a project by the architect Sir William Chamber, date 1776-96.

Eventhough neoclassicism was popular throughout 19th century, the era Age of Enlightenment saw a turn of Romanticism by the end of the century.
